Tigray is one of the nine regional states in Ethiopia, located in the northernmost part of the country. The Tigray region borders Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, Amhara region to the south and Afar region to the east. The region has an area of 50,078 km² and a population of around 8.7 million, making it Ethiopia's sixth-most populous region.
The Tigray region is known for its rugged and mountainous terrain, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 4,533 meters above sea level. There are several major rivers in the region, including the Tekeze and Mereb rivers.
The capital city of Tigray is Mekelle, which is also the administrative capital of the region. Other major cities in the region include Adigrat, Axum, and Shire.
Tigray is home to several important historical sites, including the ancient city of Axum, which was once the capital of the Axumite Empire and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lalibela, another UNESCO World Heritage site, is also close to the border of Tigray.
The Tigray region has a predominantly Tigrayan population, with Tigrinya and Amharic being the most widely spoken languages. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, with crops such as teff, wheat, barley, maize, and sorghum being grown. Livestock rearing is also an important economic activity in the region.
